An defence official has revealed that the MoD is actively examining the potential security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been advised to refrain from discussing classified matters in any vehicles.
Security Advice for Defence Personnel
During a recent appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed reports that MoD staff have been told not to talk about secret material while travelling in China-made vehicles.
The minister stated that the MoD is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, however emphasised that security is a concern in all contemporary cars.
Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their car, to avoid having discussions at a secret level in any kind of vehicle, due to the increasing risks of surveillance that exist in every single automobile, to restrict those secret conversations in secure locations. This is a prudent and sensible thing for everyone concerned about safety.
After it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using all cars from China, Pollard replied: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Broader Security Context
This revelation comes as claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable buses and bring disruption to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russia spy ship was reportedly directing laser beams at RAF aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.
The broader security environment highlights the significance of strong measures and vigilance in all aspects of government activities, from transport usage to communication habits.
