The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

As any significant prize-giving event approaches, one notices a clamor to include additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
